Improving Digital Inclusion for Visually Impaired People Using AWS with Vision Ireland

Vision Ireland, formerly known as the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI), entered into an exciting partnership with Cation Consulting and was supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to venture into a new mission in the digital accessibility revolution for the visually impaired. They sought to give these individuals access to vital information and services, especially when things were hard due to Covid-19.

Key highlights:

  • The myNCBI Smart Hub is an innovative Alexa skill developed through collaboration between Vision Ireland and Cation Consulting over a span of eleven months. With this ground-breaking tool, Vision Ireland brought resources and services that they provide for people with visual impairment all over Ireland.

  • By making use of the capabilities provided by AWS and taking advantage of Cation Consulting’s expertise, the project team ensured convenience, security and efficiency.

  • The impact of myNCBI Smart Hub cannot be overstated; it gave them easier access to audio materials, basic facts about sight loss diagnosis; and quick donation process, leading to a stunning 300% surge in donations made out to Vision Ireland.

  • Additionally, Cation Consulting & Vision Ireland also created an advanced audio content management software called the myNCBI Smart Hub as well. Marking another step in their digital inclusion journey, this application was fueled by serverless solutions provided by AWS which allowed users to access the content more efficiently and timely.

  • With regard to global digital inclusion and empowerment, Vision Ireland is enthusiastic about extending their technology and knowledge among other charities who would like it.

By working with Cation and using AWS to create its new voice-controlled Alexa skill, Vision Ireland can now provide a more robust catalog of audio content and resources to people with sight loss. Clients can use the myNCBI Smart Hub to get support and resources when they need them most. Vision Ireland can also better understand its users and their needs, and the app is seeing a consistent increase in users each month, as well as increased user retention.
